Chagrin Falls -- Village Council got good news and bad news Monday.

The good news was that Burton Scot Contractors LLC, of Burton, was the low bidder for the village's streetscape project.

The bad news was that the firm's $3,856,711 bid was $500,000 more than Village Engineer Tim Lannon's estimate of $3,580,000.

Council has been very pleased with previous Burton Scot work done here.

Council accepted the bid but will meet again soon to look over alternate sections and items to see what, if anything, could be eliminated to bring the cost down.

Council will also review budgets for its other future capital improvement projects to see "if some of the 'it would be nice to do' could be reduced to 'what has to be done,'" Council President Bill Tomko said.

The streetscape project will bury electrical wires, remove some utility poles, install decorative streetlights, and renovate the sidewalks in the downtown business district.

It was set to get underway in June but the Ohio Department of Transportation delayed the project during its review process.

It should now get underway next month with a scheduled completion of November 2005.

Village Administrator Ben Himes said the timing and location of the work phases for the project have also been changed. Phases were planned to minimize disruption for the merchants.

Phase I will start next month with burying conduits for underground electrical wiring on Main Street from West Cottage Street to East Washington Street and on North Franklin Street.

Contractors will trench and repair as they go along for minimal traffic disruption.
